Day 724 - Michael Jackson - Human Nature

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 724
Michael Jackson - Human Nature
From "Thriller"
Year: 1983

Michael Jackson died today, but you probably know that by now.

I was at work and nowhere near a computer or a TV when I heard the news. My first inclination was to expect some tasteless punchline, because let's face it: Michael Jackson's name has been associated with strange headlines and rude jokes related to those headlines for some time. It can be hard to remember that there was a time when he was legendary for a completely different set of reasons: Being exceptionally talented, and making great music.

Very few people will ever know what it's like to recieve adoration from millions of fans. I can't think of anyone outside of Michael Jackson that would have known what it felt like to have a very large percentage of those people turn on you.

This song almost wasn't included on Thriller. As the story goes: David Paich (of Toto) provided Quincy Jones with a demo tape of a couple of songs. Quincy didn't really like the demos, but he liked an incomplete song that had been accidentally left on the tape. That song would become "Human Nature"

RIP, King of Pop.

DAY 723
Wings - Let Me Roll It
From "Band on the Run"
Year: 1973

Honestly, I've just had an urge to listen to this song recently, and I was irritated to see that it wasn't on my iPod. That shall be rectified a few moments after I finish this blog entry!

Love the lead guitar, bass groove and sing-along chorus. Then again, would you expect anything less from Paul McCartney? I think not.

Day 721 - Todd Rundgren - Something to Fall Back On

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 721
Todd Rundgren - Something to Fall Back On
From "A Cappella"
Year: 1985

First heard this song on a Todd Rundgren greatest hits compilation. I found myself wondering what kind of keyboard he was using.

That's not a keyboard.

EVERYTHING in this song started out as Todd's voice. In fact, every sound on the entire "A Cappella" album started out as Todd's voice. He altered all of his vocals to make them sound like conventional instruments. That would even be a wild project by today's standards, but such an ambitious project would have been unheard of in 1985.

Then again, it seems like Todd has been ahead of his time fairly often throughout his career. He played every instrument and sang every vocal on the first 3/4 of his "Something/Anything" album. Multi-tracking yourself isn't exactly uncommon these days, but he was doing it in 1972!

Day 720 - Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 720
Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love
From "Surrealistic Pillow"
Year: 1967

I always liked "Somebody to Love" okay enough, but my friend D made me love it one night at karaoke. She rocked the hell out of this song, and I discovered how fun it was to sing those backing vocal parts. Before that moment I still would have associated the song with karaoke due to Jim Carrey's performance of the song in "The Cable Guy". Now I just associate it with D.

Yesterday could have been a terrible day, and instead it was fun, if not exhausting.

I had some errands to run yesterday morning. My vehicle died a couple of times a few blocks from my house, so I parked it at a local grocery store. I carefully drove it to our mechanic when it seemed like it had the possibility of making the voyage safely. Arrived in one piece, talked to Rachael, and decided to ask D if she could help me out since I was already going to be giving her first guitar lesson later in the day. She did come to my rescue despite the bad directions I gave to her.

Then it was a mad dash for most of the day to successfully tackle both of our errands before the guitar lesson. We squeezed lunch with Rachael into the day, but we were basically racing against time from the start.

So, this is essentially a thank you note to D for helping to make yesterday a fun experience. One of the many highlights of the day was a repeat performance of this song while we were traveling to one of our many destinations that day.

She rocked it again, by the way. The backup vocals remain a blast to sing, too.

Day 718 - Daryl Hall and John Oates - You're Much Too Soon

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 718
Daryl Hall and John Oates - You're Much Too Soon
From "War Babies"
Year: 1974

In the early to mid 90's I would frequent local Spokane record shops in the hopes of expanding my music collection for a few bucks at a time. I was on a first name basis with many of the shop owners at the time. It was always a nice treat to come across albums that I had never heard by artists that I already loved. I ran across "War Babies" on one of these expeditions, and I gladly purchased it and excitedly brought it home to hear it.

I think I may have listened to the album once.

In all fairness, it's quite possibly the most challenging Hall and Oates album to listen to.

Fast forward to this year. On a whim, I decided to give "War Babies" another chance. After all, time and perspective can change your opinion on music. It certainly worked for me with the first "Gorillaz" album. I despised that album at first, but it became one of my favorite albums of that year.

I want to love the whole "War Babies" album. I really do. On paper it looks like a spectacular combination: Hall and Oates working with Todd Rundgren. I adore a good number of songs from both artists. Todd's "A Wizard, A True Star" and "Something/Anything?" are both masterpieces. "Private Eyes" by Hall and Oates is easily one of my favorite albums of all time. Surely this combination would be like the musical equivalent of peanut butter and chocolate, right? Not so much.

My opinion could change in the future, but as of right now I still have a difficult time making it through the entire album.

I'm still glad that I gave "War Babies" another chance, because "You're Much Too Soon" is an absolute gem. Listen for the unexpected chord changes, clever lyrics, lush harmonies, Daryl's stellar lead vocals and the ever-shifting dynamics of the song that build up into a huge sounding end before fading out.

Day 717 - Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 717
Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love
From "Jane Child"
Year: 1990

I have read that one of the Pussycat Dolls has covered the song in recent history, but I haven't checked it out yet. I imagine it would be hard to top the original in my book. (UPDATE: Heard it. Autotuned to hell, lower key than the original, and lacking the soul of the original. I'll pass, thank you.)

I have been absolutely obsessing over this song for the last 48 hours or so, 'though I can't quite find the words for why that is at the moment. My rekindled love for the song started at around 5:58PM yesterday when it randomly played on my iPod and I posted the following message to Twitter:

My car stereo is not nearly loud enough to drown myself within "Don't Wanna Fall im Love" by Jane Child as much as I'd like to at the moment.

I just realized that I was so taken in by the song that I allowed a typo to go through! This is a testament to the power of this song! Today was more of the same. Posted this about 7 hours ago:

"Don't Wanna Fall in Love" by Jane Child has it's hooks stuck in me for the second day straight. "Make it stop?!" NO! Enjoying it too much.

Picking it in this blog was a given.

"Don't Wanna Fall in Love" was released in 1990, but there's an 80's feel for sure. Perhaps it's due in part to the keyboard pitch bends on the chords (which I LOVE!). Great examples of effective keyboard chord pitch bends in other songs: "Baby, Be Mine" by Michael Jackson and "DMSR" by Prince among others.

Love the chord structure, lyrics, singing, arrangement. You name it, it's great. Everything about the song. It's another example of pop perfection.

I even love the video, but I can't post a freaking link to it because I can't FIND it online! Plenty of remixes on YouTube with alternate versions of the song, but nothing with the terrific album version. Surprising AND Frustrating!

Thankfully, I CAN post a blip.fm link.

Year: 1979

"So, tonight
Gotta leave that 9 to 5 up on the shelf
And just enjoy yourself"

Perfect song for a Friday. Granted, it's NOT Friday right now, but I almost picked this last Friday because I was enjoying it so much when I got off work.

There's something to be said for temporarily taking your mind off of stressful things, and just having some fun! Mondays have become karaoke night in recent history, and it has made me look forward to this time of the week as a result.
