Day 713 - Wax - California

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 713
Wax - California
From "13 Unlucky Numbers"
Year: 1995

The Spike Jonze directed music video might be even more memorable than the song that accompanies it. Remember that video where the guy is on fire, and running in slow motion? Yep, "California" is the song that goes with it.

Honestly, I hadn't thought about this song in years. Today I saw a customer with a t-shirt that said "Southern California" on it, and that was enough to trigger the song within my memory.

I actually thanked him for wearing the shirt today and reminding me of the song. Dude probably thought I was nuts.

Day 712 - Joe Jackson - I'm the Man

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 712
Joe Jackson - I'm the Man
From "I'm the Man"
Year: 1979

I heard this song for the first time today because I became interested in Joe Jackson's back catalog on a whim after hearing "Is She Really Going Out With Him" on my iPod's random play. In less than a few hours "I'm the Man" has already become an instant favorite, and I can't stop listening to it!

At it's core the song starts out with a basic chord structure, which I found to be very noticable at first. I quickly overlooked that as a result of the frantic pace, variation in chords in the bridge, and the song's interesting lyrics.

Quite frankly, I've been obsessed with this song today. Picking it was a given, and it was important to pick it tonight rather than wait until a better time when I know more of the song's history.

Day 711 - Beastie Boys - High Plains Drifter

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 711
Beastie Boys - High Plains Drifter
From "Paul's Boutique"
Year: 1989

I'm not going to lie, I had something else in mind for today, but here's the lyric that entered into my head when I saw that I was choosing #711:

I left the car outside and the engine still revving
Taking care of business at 7-eleven

Fantastic wordplay here between Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D. Their voices weave in and out of the verses to create what essentially sounds like a three headed rapper.

Day 710 - D-Nice - Crumbs on the Table

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 710
D-Nice - Crumbs on the Table
From "Call Me D-Nice"
Year: 1990

This is not my first D-Nice selection, and it won't be the last either. (Check out choices #406 and #707).

D-Nice is hip hop royalty, of course, but he's also an amazing photographer. His blog is well worth a look. True Hip-Hop Stories: The Homeless Emcee was a particularly powerful recent entry.

"Crumbs on the table" popped into my head moments after realizing that D-Nice mentioned me in a 'follow friday' twitter message! My mind is blown! I bought 'Call Me D-Nice' on cassette in 1990! Now it's 19 years later, and he's recommending me as someone worth following on twitter?! Unreal.

D-Nice is one of many hip hop legends that seem to be joining twitter en masse. I'm still blown away by the fact that I've gotten genuine responses from a couple of my favorite artists of all time! Pos from De La Soul answered a direct question from me! Have you seen how many De La Soul selections I have already picked?! That's huge to me!

Here are some of the hip hop legends I have noticed on twitter:

D-Nice
Dana Dane
Dove, Mase and Pos of De La Soul
Eric B. and Rakim
Kool Rock-Ski and Prince Markie Dee of the Fat Boys.
Heavy D
J.J. Fad
Kool Herc
Kurtis Blow
LL Cool J
Q-tip

Check out D-Nice's blog. His photography is amazing.

Day 709 - Wheatus - Sunshine

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 709
Wheatus - Sunshine
From "Wheatus"
Year: 2000

I was happy (and a bit surprised) to have recently gotten a couple of genuine responses from Wheatus on Twitter, and that made me curious to see how many of their songs I've already picked in this blog. Surely there were at least a couple of selections by now! I was quite surprised to see that the answer was a big, fat zero. That ends this morning!

I'm actually embarrassed that it took me THIS long to pick a song by the band! Rachael beat me to it, and has already picked TWO of their songs: "Teenage Dirtbag" and "Sunshine".

When I look at your face I see dirt
All the sunshine you blow up my ass starts to hurt

Does that couplet get your attention? It sure worked for me when I first heard it.

We bought the self-titled Wheatus album after hearing "Teenage Dirtbag" on the radio, not knowing if any of the rest of the album was going to be any good. "Truffles" was a great, solid album opener, but "Sunshine" was the song that solidified my belief that we had probably just bought a fantastic album at a reasonable price. I was right. "Wheatus" is incredibly solid, and our group of friends have listened to the entire album countless times by now.

"Sunshine" has hilarious lyrics, a cool arrangement, catchy melody, and my head nearly exploded when I first heard that riff that follows the chorus.

Day 708 - Tilt - Libel

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 708
Tilt - Libel
From "'Til It Kills"
Year: 1995

This was released in 1995. Green Day was probably the closest thing to punk rock I had heard at the time. Over the years that changed primarily due to some research, and two very cool bosses I had at different jobs. Dave introduced me to the music of the Misfits, and the "This is Boston, Not L.A." compilation. Mark introduced me to NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and many of the bands on the Fat Wreck Chords label.

Fat Wreck Chords offers CD samplers for a very reasonable price, so it didn't take long for me to go out and buy all of them that I could get my hands on. This particular song can also be found on the second compilation: "Survival of the Fattest".

Cinder Block (the lead vocalist) has a great melodic voice, but she can sound raw and abrasive too. Just look up anything by her more recent band, "Retching Red" for proof.

Day 707 - D-Nice - 25 Ta Life

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 707
D-Nice - 25 Ta Life
From "To tha Rescue"
Year: 1991

Found a 99 cent cassette copy of 'To tha Rescue' at the thrift store while shopping for a Hawaiian shirt for a party tonight.

D-Nice can be a fantastic storyteller at times, and this is among his best work. The cautionary tale combined with the stellar beat makes this one of my favorites from hip hop's golden era.

These days his storytelling is primarily done through the photographs and videos he shares on his blog. It's worth a peek: http://www.d-nice.com/
