Day 669 - The Dismemberment Plan - The Ice of Boston

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 669
The Dismemberment Plan - The Ice of Boston
From "The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified"

'Pop open the third bottle of bubbly
Yeah, and I take that bottle of champagne
Go into the kitchen, stand in front of the kitchen window
And I take all my clothes off, take that bottle of champagne
And I pour it on my head, feel it cascade through my hair
And across my chest, and the phone rings.
And it’s my mother.
And she says “HI HONEY HOW’S BOSTON?”
And I stand there, all alone on New Year’s Eve
Buck naked, drenched in champagne, looking at a bunch of strangers
Uh, looking at them, looking at me, looking at them, and I say:
“Oh, I’m fine Mom—how’s Washington?”'

Happy 2009, y'all!

DAY 668
Badfinger - Midnight Caller
From "No Dice"

This is an exceptionally beautiful song with tragic, sad lyrics.

Of course, the story of Badfinger could rightfully be described as sad and tragic as well. In short, the band members signed bad contracts, faced bitter struggles as a result, and the band's two primary songwriters would eventually take their own lives.

Beastie Boys - Pass the Mic
From "Check Your Head"

I've had the urge to listen to 'Pass the Mic' a few times in recent history, but it has been absent from my iPod. Picking this tonight ensures that I will rectify that glaring omission.

I love how the Beasties re-invented themselves with every subsequent album between 'Licensed to Ill' and 'Check Your Head'. It would have been hard to have believed that the albums were by the same group if it wasn't for the distinctive sound of their voices.

Day 666 - Andy Gibb - Shadow Dancing

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 666
Andy Gibb - Shadow Dancing
From "Shadow Dancing"

And you know what hell is, folks. It's Andy Gibb, singing Shadow Dancing for eons and eons. - Denis Leary

Side note: Denis Leary's 'No Cure for Cancer' was the very first thing that Rachael and I ever watched together.

Sure, I considered picking something a little more sinister today. A Rob Zombie selection would have been ideal. Instead, I decided to go with something from Denis Leary's own personal version of hell. ANY song can get old after a while, but it would take a long time for 'Shadow Dancing' to get on my nerves.

I had the 'Shadow Dancing' album on 8-track, and it was an exciting moment whenever I reached the end of a track, because that meant I could go back to this song if I wanted to.

Sure, Andy Gibb has his share of detractors, but I know I'm not the only fan out there. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have even been known to cover this song at live shows.

Day 665 - The Dismemberment Plan - The City

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 665
The Dismemberment Plan - The City
From "Emergency and I"

One thing I can say about OUR city at the moment; it has been hit with a lot of snow.

3 feet of the white stuff fell within a 24 hour time period a few days ago. So, we bought tire chains for my vehicle. The next morning, it wouldn't start and it still won't start, so the chains don't help just yet. We've been trying to arrange for a tow truck to get it to our trusted auto mechanic, but all of the local towing companies are too backed up with work to do it. So, that leaves us sharing Rachael's car. Her car does NOT have chains. Trying to find chains in town has also been fruitless thus far, because everybody wants them now. Needless to say, we're only driving when we absolutely have to.

The Dismemberment Plan's 'Emergency and I' has been my snow shoveling soundtrack of choice, so I've been listening to it a lot over the last few days. Keeping up with the walkways is one thing, but digging out our vehicles has been a completely different adventure. Our friend Rick helped me to dig out a path for Rachael's car, and later that evening both vehicles were buried again once the plow came by.

This whole album just seems to get better with time. I never thought of 'The City' as a standout cut, but I listened to it almost non-stop on the way to work this morning. I couldn't get it out of my head, and I still can't.

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 664
Gin Blossoms - 'Til I Hear it From You
From "Empire Records: The Soundtrack"

I have snow to shovel before I go to bed, so I'll make this brief.

This is my favorite song by the Gin Blossoms, and the special guest appearance may have something to do with that.

Marshall Crenshaw co-wrote this song, and he sang backup vocals too. He has a knack for making songs that I like a lot. To date, Marshall has shown up three times in this blog with choices #6, #64 and #242. This isn't my first song choice with a Marshall Crenshaw guest appearance either. He also played on choice #325.

In short, this is a very good song from a good soundtrack to a good movie.

Day 663 - Sam and Dave - A Place Nobody Can Find

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 663
Sam and Dave - A Place Nobody Can Find
From "The Best of Sam & Dave"

Reports indicate that we received over 30 inches of snow in areas of Spokane yesterday. The side roads are impossible to get through without 4 wheel drive, or chains. Bought chains yesterday, and still couldn't get to work this morning because my vehicle wouldn't start. My battery should be charged in a couple of hours, and we'll see if that helps.

Bill Dahl describes the history behind this song better than I ever could. Here's what he had to say:

Atlantic Records honcho Jerry Wexler signed soul-searing Miami duo Sam Moore and Dave Prater and promptly dispatched them down to Stax/Volt in Memphis, no doubt anticipating a raft of hits. “A Place Nobody Can Find” was Sam & Dave’s first Stax single in 1965; though it didn’t crack the charts, the ingredients for the pair’s future mammoth success are in fiery evidence. The gospel-fired duo’s electrifying vocals are propelled by a crackling groove from Booker T. & The MG’s, Stax’s resident horn section blasting in strategically. Dig the dynamics toward the end, where everybody cools out just a bit for a few seconds before turning the heat back up full blast. When its songwriter David Porter teamed with Isaac Hayes to take over as Sam & Dave’s Stax mentors right after this, the pair ignited like twin sticks of double dynamite.

DAY 661
Scritti Politti - Small Talk
From "Cupid and Psyche 85"

I'm sure that I'm eventually going to pick all of the songs from "Cupid and Psyche 85". I enjoy a great deal of Scritti Politti's musical output, but this album was my introduction to the project, and it's solid from beginning to end if you don't count the extended remixes included on the cassette and CD. Bonus content is nice and all, but sometimes it interrupts the flow of the album.

Like the other songs on the album, 'Small Talk' has very cool chord changes, and clever lyrics hidden within a shimmering 80's pop sound.

I heard a whisper
That careless talk costs more than you bargained for
In seventh heaven
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly baby

My new musician bio

Most musician bios tend to straight up piss me off. They're normally written to make a band or artist sound like they're the greatest thing since the Beatles.

Words about how awesome you are will not make me want to listen to you. In fact, an overly glowing bio will likely ENSURE that I ignore the music attached to it. The music should speak for itself. If I think you're amazing, I'll probably communicate that to you at some point. You might even eventually find one of your songs listed in my 10,000 favorite songs blog.

Of course, it does help when people actually LISTEN, and a little bit of background information about an artist sometimes helps me to appreciate them more...

Well, crap.

So, I suppose a bio can be handy if it's written properly. This one won't be, but it probably won't be like any other one you have read to date.

I should probably type in some information here. I would say "tell you a bit more about myself", but I'm not really speaking here. Honestly, I'm listening to Ellis Paul, pouring my thoughts into a computer in my living room, and I am wearing pajama pants. These particular ones do not have Domo-Kun printed all over them. They are comfy, however.

A little TOO much information, perhaps? Yeah. Probably.

Me? I don't make the best music you've ever heard, but it's probably not the worst you've heard either. With any luck you will like some of the songs you hear if you decide to listen. I do attempt to draw from a wide variety of musical influences, but hopefully I won't sound too much like any one of them.

If you ARE listening, thank you! There are literally millions of other songs you could be listening to instead, and that's without throwing in the countless other activities you could be doing with your time. It's a humbling thing to consider, really. As musicians we're competing with every piece of recorded music that's available out there, whether we're trying to or not.

Competition is not the primary force that drives me to create, but I have found that websites like songfight.org, FAWM and album-a-day can be great motivators. I have composed a good number of songs as a direct result of those websites, and others like them.

I love music. I love to make music, and I love to listen to it. Some of my recordings turn out better than others, and hopefully I'm improving with time. I make songs in my basement, and I share them online. You can download what you like for free at this link:

http://www.glenncase.com/all.html

As a general rule, the older songs tend to be crappier in my opinion. I guess you could say that I'm showcasing some of my failures alongside my prouder moments. At this time, I'm happiest with "Waterfall of Consciousness" and "Nur Ein". They would be great places to start if you're not already familiar with my material as you read these words.

The only music I have for sale at the moment is a soundtrack available through PBC Productions. I was fortunate enough to work with PBC on a web-sitcom called 'The New Adventures of Captain S'. I created original music for the end credits of each episode, and I also came up with some of the background music you hear within the episodes.

I might eventually start to sell some other music, but I want the songs to sound amazing if people are going to spend their money on it. That's going to take some time. It already has taken time. To date, I have attempted to make a purchasable album several times, and I have always scrapped the project. I promise nothing, but I'm hoping that 2009 will be the year where I break that habit. We'll see.

I'm notorious for coming up with fun ideas that either never happen, or don't materialize until years later.

Reasons you might already recognize me:

- I have occasionally contributed to SongFight.org since 2003.

- Made music for 'The New Adventures of Captain S'

- I am the former and current bass player for Buffalo Jones

- I was in a band called The Half Racks for a number of years.

- I was 1/5 of The Grammar Club for "Bremelanotide", but I resigned from the group shortly after completion of the EP. I do wish my former band-mates well, and I'm sure they will continue to do great things in that project, and with their other projects for that matter.

- Created the theme song for 'Still Gaming'

- Created the background music for "Hard News" on ScrewAttack.com

- This one deserves a short story. I had the pleasure of being MC Frontalot's bass player at the first Penny Arcade Expo as a result of my songfight connections. Front didn't have a band back then, but he was asked to perform. Our rag-tag group of songfight backing musicians had two rehearsals, and I think the show went well enough under the circumstances. He came back the next year with an actual band, and they were at least 10 times better. His shows have gotten exponentially awesome with time, and now he's pretty much a Jedi bad-ass. Speaking of Star Wars...

- I have a few mc chris remixes out there, most notably a version of Fett's Vette called "The Imperial Mix". mc used the beat (with my permission) on one of his tours

That's more than enough for now. If you remain interested in more information, here are some pertinent links for you:

Day 660 - Muse - Time is Running Out

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 660
Muse - Time is Running Out
From "Absolution"

Several friends have recommended Muse to me over the past couple of years. Well, my friend David recently made an introductory mix CD of some of their choice cuts, and "Time is Running Out" is the first song that has thoroughly stuck it's hooks into me. The song has excellent use of dynamics, vivid lyrics, cool chord changes, stellar vocals and a tasty guitar solo to boot. The Dr. Strangelove references in the video are the proverbial icing on the cake.

As a new listener, I will say that one thing is highly distracting about Muse; Matthew Bellamy's voice sounds almost exactly like Thom Yorke to me, and my limited research indicates that the comparison is a common one. Being compared to such a legendary band is not necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but to me this is a band that sounds like Radiohead in a parallel universe where they decided to stick with a similar formula after the success of "OK Computer".

I'm glad that I finally took some time to check this band out. I'll be returning the favor to David by making a mix CD to introduce him to the Pixies.

Day 659 - Team:Music - Death Plunge

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 659
Team:Music - Death Plunge
From the Songfight.org archives, April 2003

The title seemed appropriate today because of events that transpired this afternoon. It went something like this:

Hello, iPod! Meet the tile floor!

*SMACK!*

What? The two of you don't get along?

Well, crap! Looks like you need to be repaired or replaced!

It would have been hard to have imagined portable mp3 players 20 years ago. I've only had mine for less than a year. Now, I can hardly imagine not having one. Sadly, I'm going to learn what it's like to be without one for a while. It took a death plunge from my hands to the hard floor, and it did not survive.

Yook, Mo and Dame collaborated on this SongFight title back in April of 2003. The band name originally appeared in Yook's comic, entitled "Comic!" This song is delightfully original and fun.

Right now this is the only musical output from this trio, and although that isn't likely to change, I hold out some hope that it won't stay that way.

Day 657 - Big Star - When My Baby's Beside Me

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 657
Big Star - When My Baby's Beside Me
From "#1 Record"

For about four years, I have worked behind the scenes in radio. For the past month or so, I have had two jobs. I have been looking at the calendar and planning out times when I can sleep. That's not going to be a problem now, as the issues with our economy and job market have now affected me directly.

I was laid off from the radio job yesterday. I'll miss the extra paycheck, but I'm actually pretty happy about this not wholly unexpected development. More and more layoffs were happening over time in that building, but I wanted to ride things out just on the off-chance that things were going to get better with time. They didn't get better, and it got to the point where none of the jobs seemed to be safe any more. It is one of the reasons why I GOT a second job, and it's a good thing that I did!

In the meantime I shouldn't have to strategize sleeping opportunities as much , and I may actually have some free time now! Plus, I'm already making more money at my NEW job than I was making after four years in radio.

I feel for my co-workers that are going to be looking for work, because the company let go of some very good people. With any luck, they shouldn't have too much trouble finding something better.

In the meantime, the song is appropriate because you could say that my baby's beside me and I'm not worried. I'm a firm believer in just rolling with whatever is thrown my way, and trying to make things work as best as I can. Worrying doesn't help the situation, and it doesn't solve anything. It serves no constructive purpose, so I try to avoid it if at all possible.

The first line in the song's a little funny at the moment 'though, because I do need to talk to my doctor tomorrow. About a month ago I made an appointment to have a physical done. I haven't had one in years, if ever.

Don't need to talk to my doctor
Don't need to talk to my shrink
Don't need to hide behind no locked doors
I don't need to think

'Cause when my baby's beside me, I don't worry
When my baby's beside me, All I know
When my baby's beside me, I don't worry
When my baby's beside me, All I know

Day 656 - A Tribe Called Quest - Butter

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 656
A Tribe Called Quest - Butter
From "The Low End Theory"

When it comes to A Tribe Called Quest, I have always preferred the sound of Q-tip's voice. Phife almost seemed unnecessary through most of "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm". Then with the release of "The Low End Theory", Phife not only came into his own, he delivered some of the best lines on the album! What a difference one year can make!

'Butter' puts the spotlight on Phife, and he delivers top notch lyrics over one of the greatest hip hop beats that I have ever heard. In fact, as I listened to this hip hop classic today, I wanted to identify the samples. I had my answer after a Google search. I would have loved to have had the ability to research things so quickly and easily back when I was listening to these classic hip hop tracks for the first time. As it was, I would go to the library to check out magazine articles, and to check out CDs of oldies music I didn't know.

The chorus samples 'Gentle Smiles' by Gary Bartz, the verses take their hypnotic groove from "Young and Fine" by Weather Report and the drums come from "I Like Everything About You" by Chuck Jackson.

Day 655 - Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 655
Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain
From "In Through the Out Door"

"In Through the Out Door" featured a fairly unique idea for the album artwork. Six different album covers were released, each depicting a scene from the perspecive of six different people. The focus is a man seated at a bar, and he's burning what appears to be a "Dear John" letter. Furthermore, you wouldn't know which artwork you were getting, because it was covered with a plain brown paper bag exterior. Fun idea, and I bet it wasn't cheap.

This song popped into my head as I was leaving my first job today. I hadn't thought about the song in quite a while. In fact, this comes from an album that I just listen to in the background, and I couldn't remember the name of the song. I've heard it dozens of times, but for some reason I had it in my head that "South Bound Saurez" was the song I was thinking of.

Well, it wasn't, but now I know better.

Day 654 - Ween - Freedom of '76

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal for your convenience.

DAY 654
Ween - Freedom of '76
From "Chocolate and Cheese"

If you're reading this, it's too late to warn you, but the 'Chocolate and Cheese' cover art is about as NSFW as 'Lemonade and Brownies' by Sugar Ray, or 'Country Life' by Roxy Music. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples, but those were the first ones that came to mind. Who knows, maybe your boss will compliment you on your fine taste in music while they are writing up your final warning. Them's the breaks. The job market is tough right now. They needed a good reason to fire you anyway.

I apologize for the sporadic updates to this blog. I'm still attempting to adjust to my schedule now that I have two jobs. That's not the only reason for the lack of entries, mind you. I also just haven't been motivated.

Today I'm operating on about three hours of sleep, so I feel a little loopy. That may have something to do with why this song is appealing to me even more than usual right now. Hear that crazy singing at the end of the song? Yeah, that's how I feel right now.

'Chocolate and Cheese' is one of the most diverse albums I can remember hearing that isn't a compilation of some sort. I don't know if they intentionally tackled a different genre for every song, but it sounds like it could have been their plan.

On the subject of the album title: I like most chocolate, and I like many varieties of cheese, but a combination of the two does not sound appetizing to me at all.
