DAY 195
The Humblebums - "Steamboat Row"
From "Please Sing a Song For Us... The Transatlantic Anthology"

First things first. Roymond has decided to join our 10,000 song party, so check out his blog, and wish him a happy birthday today.
In other news, I am THRILLED with a CD purchase I made this week.
Anyone who has known me for a while might know that I am a fan of Gerry Rafferty's work, and particularly his early work with The Humblebums. I've covered a few of the songs, but I'll get back to that in a moment.
The Humblebums released 3 albums of material, and if you want to buy them in the U.S., you're buying them as imports. They're listed at $35.99 a PIECE on Amazon right now! Well, for $18.99 I found an import two-CD retrospective called "Please Sing a Song For Us... The Transatlantic Anthology". It features EVERY song from those 3 albums, a single that wasn't even released on an album, and 9 other bonus cuts. 50 songs for less than I would have paid for ONE of the imported original albums!
Yeah. I am VERY happy.
Admittedly, it is a little weird to listen to some of the first songs on the album. The first album was made before Gerry joined the Humblebums. It's a completely different sound. It's not bad, but it is definitely different.
Purists will note that "Steamboat Row" actually shows up first on their album "Open Up the Door". Funny enough, the cover photo for "Please Sing a Song For Us..." is the same artwork used for "Open Up the Door"!
Anyway, I have a vinyl copy of an album called "Gerry Rafferty". It was released on Visa records when Gerry found success with his "City to City" album. What the album didn't bother to mention is that these were all old Humblebums songs placed in new packaging to capitalize on his new solo success years later. I only found out about the true nature of the songs a few years ago when I broke out that vinyl LP, fell in love with the songs all over again, and did some Google research.
Then I started covering the songs from "Gerry Rafferty", little by little. My intention was to cover every song from the album, because I like them all that much.
One of the covers I finished was "Steamboat Row".
Through the power of the internet, I was able to tell Gerry Rafferty about my little project, and he HEARD my take on "Steamboat Row"! He actually sent an e-mail my way! Here's the portion of the e-mail that pertains to the cover:
"Dear Glenn,
I liked your version of my song Steamboat Row. Your voice
sounds
remarkably like mine in my early recordings, your harmonies are pretty
tight
and the backing track sounds good, even through the speakers on my
office
computer.
I look forward to hearing the rest of your versions of my songs and
good
luck.
Regards Gerry
It is very nice to have these songs on CD. This may be nearly the only thing I listen to all this week.
ROCK!
