Day 182 - The Freeze - Refrigerator Heaven

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.

DAY 182
The Freeze - "Refrigerator Heaven"
From "This is Boston, Not L.A."

SPECIAL NOTE: Oddly enough, Alice Cooper has a song called "Refrigerator Heaven" too. This is not that song.

SPECIAL NOTE #2: I was really hoping to find a YouTube video clip for this song, but all I found was this, which is entertaining, but it has nothing to do with the song either.

So, Dave gave me a thumbs up for choosing "Stranger Than Fiction" yesterday. This is the same guy who gave the thumbs down to Extreme's "Tragic Comic" a while back. I mentioned his opinion that time, so I figured that I might as well mention it this time too.

Keeping with a punk theme, there was a hardcore punk compilation from 1982 that a different Dave introduced to my ears in 1999: "This is Boston, Not L.A."

If Bad Religion had a sound that was new to my ears when I heard it, "This is Boston, Not L.A." sounded like it was from a different PLANET. The sound on the disc is raw, hard, and blisteringly fast. Many of the songs are also very short. The 30 to 90 second songs on this CD were not only an influence on me, I'm not sure that I would have ever made any music under the "Basket Robbers" name if I hadn't heard this album.

In fact, "Basket Robbers" came about because Dave number two was a co-worker of mine, and he was having a crappy day. To put him in a better mood, I came up with the lyrics for the first Basket Robbers song, and he cracked up laughing. The project was meant as a joke at first, but the more that I created these new punk songs, the more I ended up liking the music that had inspired it.

"Refrigerator Heaven" is the last song on "This is Boston, Not L.A.", and it's a great way to close things out. I love the contrast between the mellow verses and the harsh, fast choruses. Same goes for the second verse, where the vocal gets more desperate as the situation described in the lyrics gets more serious.

Wait, Fridgie. I'm coming.
And don't close your door, okay?
And my cartoons, they're all over
And it's such a rainy day
And it seems that you are calling me
And will give me things to eat
But in Refrigerator Heaven
I will be the treat

The door shutting seems so muffled
For a clanging piece of tin
B..But the handle's on the outside
You only can get IN
My hands, they're red from banging
And I think I'm about to cry
Because Refrigerator Heaven
Is such an awful place to die.

I might be the biggest poser on the planet when I'm creating Basket Robbers songs, but I know good punk when I hear it.

ROCK!
